Get involved

This runs on people
who put their hand up.

Sydney VMUG has no staff. Speakers, sponsors and volunteers are the whole machine. Three ways in, all of them start with an email.

Speak

Twenty minutes on something you actually did. A migration, an outage, an automation that saved you a weekend, a product that did not do what the datasheet said.

First-time speakers get help shaping the talk and a friendly room. This is a genuinely low-stakes place to start.

Sponsor

Sponsorship covers the venue, the food and the vBeers. In return you get named plainly, a technical slot if you want one, and a room full of the people who run the estates you sell into.

No leads list, no badge scanning, no keynote.

Help run it

Registration desk, AV, finding venues, chasing speakers, keeping the channels alive. Small jobs, real difference, and a fast way to know everyone.

VMUG leadership is also a recognised path if you want it on your CV.

What makes a good VMUG session

  • Show the config. Screenshots, CLI, topology diagrams. The room can read.
  • Include what broke. The failure is usually more useful than the success, and always more memorable.
  • Skip the company intro slide. Nobody needs the founding date and the office map.
  • Leave time for questions. Aim for 20 minutes of content and 10 of Q&A rather than 35 and a rush.
  • Assume a mixed room. Some people run three hosts, some run three thousand. Say which you are pitching at.

Not sure it is worth a session? Send the idea anyway. Talks get shaped in the conversation more often than they arrive fully formed.

Happy to be recorded, or would rather not be? Either is fine — tell us when you pitch, and see the media page for how recordings are handled.

Wider VMUG opportunities

Beyond Sydney there is a global call for content, virtual events, webcasts and the leadership programme, all run centrally.

Sponsors

What sponsorship actually buys.

A community that trusts the content, and access to it on honest terms. Global partner programmes are handled by VMUG centrally; for a Sydney meet-up, email us directly and we will send the current options.
